Blog Addiction Syndrome

Do you have that feeling of having an affair with your blog? That same feeling that you can’t stop thinking about it? Always asking yourself "how is it going" when your unavailable to check it out? Can’t stop yourself looking at your blog’s stats every now and then to a point you wake up in the middle of the night just to take a sneak peak of what’s going on? Always considering events in your lives worthy to be blogged or not?

Alright! Alright! The reason I’m asking those questions is that I’m guilty of those, damn I just can’t help it! lol. I’ve made a search lately regarding this blog addiction thing, and I found a funny article that exactly states what I’m currently feeling, though not all of them. The title of the article is "The "Mock 10" Signs of Blog Addiction". I was really surprised on how I can relate to this article, and many bloggers as well admits their guilt about it. What caught my attention is the comment of one of the readers of the item. It says,

Even though your "Mock 10" signs of blog addiction are meant to be funny (kind of like Letterman’s 10 ten Lists), believe it or not, there really seems to be a dependency called “blog addiction.”

Let me explain. I have recently started to complie a list of the different “addictions” I have been reading about on some of the blogs. So far I have enountered the following dependencies: drugs, alcohol, sex, porn, oil (as in petroleum), gambling, food, exercise, love, video games, comment addiction (i.e., checking the comments on one’s blog), window shopping, thrill seeking, yarn addiction (not a misprint!), Internet addiction, Technorati addiction, addiction to online gaming, information addiction, addiction to technology, and now blog addiction.

I just wanted to let you guys know about this.

Upon reading that comment, I asked myself, "Is this blog addiction really a serious matter?". Upon thinking about it for days now, I guess it could be serious, actually depending on how deep your addiction is. In extreme cases where a blogger does not really take time to go out, always in front of his computer and has really a great obsession in blogging, well, there’s a lot of things to worry about. These could lead to depression, sickness and obviously, a dead social life. Well, fortunately, I don’t belong in the extreme cases.

That article woke me up from a somewhat paranoia. I just can’t stop thinking about my blog! Honestly, there are few things that I have sacrificed because of blogging. I stopped my review classes because of blogging, hehe. But don’t get me wrong, that review was just an advance class, I’ll be taking that one next semester anyway that’s why I decided to concentrate at blogging while I’m not yet that busy.

Aside from the question about the seriousness of blog addiction, another thought pops out in my head. It’s about the difference of  being passionate in doing something, and being addictive in doing it. That thought is still on the process of research and analysis, and I’m thinking to create a separate post about that sometime in the future.

What I have learned from here is that there is really nothing wrong in blogging (the whole world will curse me if I say their is). But ,unless you’re really making a living out of it, to much of blogging or should I say, too much time spent in front of the computer blogging, could do no good. "Lahat ng sobra ay masama (Everything excessive will bring no good)". That saying perfectly gives the best advice.

Blog addicts like me, raise your hand. lol

Was passing by. I think when I first started blogging three years ago, I had a phase, now it’s something that i do just for the freedom of self-expression. I used to be guilty of everything on the link you have there. Now, I don’t care anymore if a lot of people make comments or don’t comment much. Just the knowledge that a few people read mine is good enough for me. A lot of my older blog buddies feel much the same way.

I was exactly in the same mindset about 4 months ago. The best part really was reading the comments of the readers who took time to visit my blogs. Don’t worry, it will subside somehow. I guess you’re almost there. You are already below the 1,000,000 threshold of alexa ranking. Once you reach 500K things will stabilize for you. That’s just my guess though. :-)

    Cheers!
